Design ideas for your Headboard Wall

No matter what size your bedroom and what style of bed, the focal point of most bedrooms is the bed, it’s linens and the wall behind it. And it seems that the simpler the bed design the more we need to decorate the wall behind it. The simplest treatment is to paint or wallpaper just that wall, with a bright color or wild pattern. After all when you’re in bed you don’t even see what is behind you.

A classic design solution is a drapery made of gathered fabric with perhaps a false canopy or a valance. Or I have used decorative screens or grill work, to bring some pattern onto that wall. If you have no headboard, then an upholstered panel behind the bed will give you something to lean against. Or, if you have an upholstered headboard then mirrored panels or a series of picture frames creating a grid pattern, is a textural foil against the fabric of the bed.

For those looking for a more permanent idea, adding wainscoting behind the bed, up the wall (and even partly on to the ceiling) can give a “built in” feel to the bedroom.

The same would be true of beaded board or an application of wall covering embossed to look like metal tiles. Or, the ultimate for the avid reader would be a built-in bookcase with permanent lighting for reading in bed.
Want to indulge your teen in helping them to decorate on a budget? Go for a magnetic primer paint so they can rearrange posters and artwork without marking up the wall. Or there are some fun murals, or decals for temporary art. For a while we had a life sized Gilbert Arenas decal jumping across my son’s wall.
